Build your own future

Build your own future

My best friend once told me that he would know that he had 'made it' when he could make a hundred bucks while sitting on the john.

‘Course, that was before he had a phone in the bathroom.

I think he kind of missed the point with that move…. He had the right idea. Give me residual income over linear income any day. But I would have thought the idea was to have more private time, not less.

The phone in the bathroom was definitely not a move in the right direction.

Everyone dreams of making money while they sleep

I think that everyone has the dream of making money while they sleep at one time or another. Very few are ever taught how to do it. Very few are qualified (having recently done it themselves) to teach others how to do it. Even fewer still are willing to do the work that it takes now in order to reap the rewards long term.

When I win the lottery

So what’re you going to do, win the lottery?

Well, that might be nice, but do you know how many lottery winners turn up dead broke in short order after their ‘winning’ moment? The sad reality is that we are not taught from young what we should do with money, how to make it work for us rather than us having to work for it.

The idea that a sudden lump of cash is going to make a lifetime of difference is slim to none…. About as likely as winning the lottery in the first place.

It’s what you do with the money that you have that counts. The real secret to building your own future and making money while you sleep has two parts then.

There are two parts to the puzzle

First, you have to work within an industry that pays recurring, residual income. Trading time for money short term has its pluses, but long term, it’s not a real solution to the wealth called ‘time freedom’ … after all, that’s what we’re really wanting isn’t it?

Money is just a tool…. It’s the freedom that comes with having more than we need that we are really seeking.

And second, you have to know what to do with the darn stuff once you’ve got more than you need. Or better yet, be learning how to manage money as a part of the process of building your own future.

Does bancruptcy actually 'solve' anything?

Consumer debt and personal bankruptcies are everywhere you turn. Kind of makes you wonder what’s gone so terribly wrong.

See, the thing is, we’ve been taught extremely well by everyone around us and the advertising-miracle-workers how to spend money on things. Things that have no hope of ever paying us back.

Take a couple I know as a perfect example. They filed for bankruptcy (not unlike winning the lottery) but didn’t get the money training that they need in order to avoid making the same mistakes again.

Big problem in my mind.

Time will tell what a new Suburban, the bathroom renovation and the cosmetic surgery that all came to pass soon after the fact are leading to … I have my opinions.

The secret equation

Residual income + money education = true time freedom

Leave any part of that equation out and you will likely never get there.

To your success,
Andrea
